Discovering Authentic Culture in Chaozhou
This article is based on our personal experience during our one month travel in Southern China.

Chaozhou. The very name lingers on my tongue like a melody I’ve always known. For most travelers, Chaozhou is a city in eastern Guangdong Province—a cradle of ancient culture and culinary mastery. But for me, part of a one-month “bleisure” adventure across Southern China, this visit was more than just another stop on my itinerary. It was a journey to a place I had never been, yet somehow always belonged.
Chaozhou is the heart of my heritage, woven through childhood stories, family recipes, and the unique dialect spoken by my grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
I am 7/8 Teochew Chinese and 1/8 Cambodian—a blend that often leaves people guessing about my heritage. Despite this being my first time in China—let alone Chaozhou—I felt a strange sense of familiarity upon arrival. My late maternal grandmother who was my living bridge to this city, keeping our Teochew customs, stories, and family recipes alive. As I wandered these streets with her memory in my heart, I realized how deeply a place you’ve never seen can still feel like home.
Chaozhou greets you with a harmony of eras. The Han River still glitters beneath the sun, ancient city walls embrace bustling markets, and the air is thick with the aroma of simmering broths and sweet pastries. The city pulses with the notes of Chaozhou music—soft, lingering, and full of emotion—drifting from teahouses and temple courtyards.
Step into ancient Chaozhou and you’ll feel authenticity mixed in with a touch of modern: from the elegant curves of traditional rooftops, the long bars across the windows, to the spotless alleyways, swept morning and afternoon by residents who take immense pride in their home.
Wandering the old town, I felt the weight of centuries in the stone-paved streets and weathered wooden doors. I’m suddenly hit with nostalgia from childhood familiarty—the red banners with well-wishes stuck on the side of heavy wooden doorways, the tea sets with tiny porcelain on dark timber tables behind them, the gleaming wood furniture that felt so familiar. Only then did I realize these scenes, which shaped my upbringing and short time with my late-grandmother, had found their way from my childhood memories – I was discovering the origins behind them here, in my first steps through my ancestral homeland.

Must-Do Experiences in Chaozhou
1. Walk Across Guangji Bridge
Crossing Guangji Bridge felt like stepping through a portal in time. This ancient marvel, with its floating sections that assemble and disassemble each day, has witnessed centuries of history. Standing mid-bridge, the Han River flowing beneath, I imagined generations of my ancestors making this same crossing—traders, pilgrims, families seeking fortune or simply a moment’s peace. The panoramic view and gentle breeze made me pause, breathe, and feel deeply connected to this land.

2. Taste Chaozhou Handmade Beef Balls
No trip to Chaozhou is complete without savoring Chaozhou’s legendary handmade beef balls. Springy, juicy, and rich with the flavor of tradition, each bite is a testament to the region’s culinary craftsmanship. Watching the vendor rhythmically hand pound the beef—a method passed down through generations—I only realise now why beef balls were always served as part of our family meals.
3. Enjoy Chaozhou-Style Breakfast Dumplings
Mornings in Chaozhou begin with a steamer basket of crystal-clear dumplings, their translucent skins barely containing savory fillings of chives, pork, or shrimp. One serving is never enough

4. Try Fried Sugar Taro
Chaozhou’s fried sugar taro was my favourite snack as a child, and only now do I realise where it came from. Seeing it at a street stall evoked a wave of pride, joy, and belonging. Crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, each piece is dusted with a delicate frost of crystallized sugar. One bite and I was a child again, these moments of realisation bring up tears of emotion.

5. Participate in a Traditional Gongfu Tea Ceremony
Tea in Chaozhou is more than a drink; it’s a ritual of connection. I joined locals for a gongfu tea ceremony, where tiny cups of strong, aromatic tea were poured with practiced grace. The conversation flowed as freely as the tea, and I understood why my grandmother always insisted that “tea is best shared.” Here, brewing tea is a daily meditation—a way to slow down and savor life’s details.

6. Cool Off with Chaozhou Ice Cream
Definitely a treat for tourists, but an iconic must-do. Shaped like Kaiyuan Temple, Chaozhou ice cream is light, subtly sweet, and often infused with flavors like taro or peanut—the perfect antidote to the city’s humid embrace. Watching my children joyfully licking these icy morsels, I realized some scenes are truly timeless.
7. Taste Preserved Sugared Tangerine
Chaozhou’s preserved sugared tangerine is a local delicacy—sweet, tangy, and bursting with flavor. It’s a simple treat that captures the essence of the city: tradition, patience, and a love for life’s small pleasures. Best enjoyed with fragrant tea Chaozhou style!

8. Take a Ride in a Local Tuk-Tuk
Zipping through narrow lanes in a tuk-tuk, I saw Chaozhou from a new angle—markets bursting with color, elders playing chess beneath banyan trees, the city’s energy humming all around me. It’s a playful, practical way to explore, and every ride is an adventure.
Reflections: Finding Myself in Chaozhou
This journey was more than a return to my ancestral city—it was a homecoming to myself. I saw my heritage not as something distant or abstract, but as a living, breathing part of who I am. Each meal, every conversation, and all the sensory details—sights, sounds, tastes—wove together the tapestry of my identity.
